About Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a therapeutic form of bodywork developed in Japan founded on the principles of East Asian Medicine.  Although the word Shiatsu translates literally from Japanese as "finger pressure", in practice, the thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet are used to apply pressure and restore balance. Pressure can be gentle or firm depending on the condition being treated.

Treatment may also include the use of flowing stretches and gentle rotations of the limbs and joints, simple structural alignments and muscle release techniques.

On a physical level this has the effect of stimulating circulation and the flow of lymphatic fluid. It also works on the autonomic nervous system; helps to release toxins and deep-seated tension from the muscles, and can also stimulate the hormonal system.

On a subtler level Shiatsu allows the receiver to deeply relax, stimulating the body’s inherent ability for self healing and regeneration.

Typically, a person receiving Shiatsu remains clothed and often is covered by a blanket for warmth. Traditionally a tenugui cloth is used over the area where pressure is applied and often another tenugui cloth gently covers the eyes.

A treatment can take place on a futon, on a massage table or on a chair depending on the needs of the client.

The effectiveness of Shiatsu in maintaining balance may be supported with recommendations regarding diet, yoga, meditation and exercise as part of a holistic approach to wellness.

Shiatsu therapists are trained to individualise their assessment of each client and their presenting condition, effecting a holistic treatment plan. Shiatsu can address acute symptoms whilst improving the general health of a client, preventing further illness through regulating the autonomic nervous system and supporting the immune system.

Common concerns or issues that shiatsu therapists help clients resolve include:

  • Stress and sleep issues
  • Chronic illness
  • Pain - acute and chronic
  • Women’s health
  • Musculoskeletal issues

Other conditions include injuries, respiration issues, post surgical support, headaches, lower back pain, postural change, depression and fatigue.

Shiatsu is a safe and effective therapy used to restore and maintain health. People of all ages, including babies, children and the elderly can benefit from treatments.
Shiatsu has become part of our modern healthcare system in Australia due to the acceptance of evidence based research and the lobbying carried out by our Association on behalf of our practitioner members.

Established in 1987, the Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia Inc. (STAA) is the National Peak Body representing Shiatsu Therapists.

STAA is dedicated to expanding the awareness and recognition of Shiatsu in the Australian community and its integration into the healthcare system.
